Adirondacks On The Common

Creating Places to Gather. Building Community Connections.

The Shrewsbury Town Common has long been a gathering place at the heart of our community. Adirondacks on the Common is an STCA placemaking initiative designed to make that special public space even more welcoming, inviting, and connected.

Through the addition of locally crafted Adirondack chairs, STCA is creating comfortable places for residents and visitors to sit, gather, connect, and enjoy the heart of Shrewsbury—whether attending a community event, visiting a local business, meeting a friend, or simply spending time on the Common.

Made possible through the support of local businesses, organizations, residents, and community partners, Adirondacks on the Common represents a simple idea with lasting impact: creating spaces that bring people together.

From an Idea to the Common

Years in the Making

Adirondacks on the Common is the result of years of planning and collaboration around ways to thoughtfully activate the Shrewsbury Town Common while respecting its historic character and importance to the community.

On June 18, 2026, the Shrewsbury Historic District Commission approved STCA's Certificate of Appropriateness for the installation of Adirondack chairs on the Common, allowing the initiative to move from vision to reality.

Designed specifically with the character of the Town Center in mind, the black Adirondack chairs provide a timeless look that complements the historic Common while creating a new way for people to experience and enjoy the space.

More Than a Chair

Creating a More Welcoming Town Common

Adirondacks on the Common is about more than adding seating. It is about creating places where people can slow down, spend time together, and experience the heart of Shrewsbury in a new way.

Whether meeting a friend, enjoying a cup of coffee, visiting a local business, attending a community event, or simply spending time on the Common, the chairs create comfortable and inviting places for everyday moments and meaningful connections.

By thoughtfully activating the Town Common, STCA is helping make this important public space even more welcoming, engaging, and connected to the community around it.

Designed for Shrewsbury Town Center

Thoughtful Design. Locally Crafted. Lasting Impact.

STCA partnered with Riverwood Custom, a Massachusetts-based company, to custom-build the Adirondack chairs specifically for the Shrewsbury Town Common. Made in the USA and designed with the character of the Town Center in mind, the chairs combine quality craftsmanship with a timeless design that complements this important historic setting.

The classic black finish was selected to complement the character and architectural elements found throughout the Town Center while providing a durable, cohesive look on the Common.

Each chair also tells the story of the community behind the initiative through two custom brass plaques:
